Not quite a book unless you think of a book as any volume that deserves to be on every worth shelf.

The annual round-up of the year’s most memorable images by The New York Times is something I look forward to every December.

In a time when most newspapers are talking about cutbacks, shrinking newsholes, disappearing budget etc etc, it is really heartening to see NYT devoting an entire section of the paper to these unforgettable pictures. There is also an accompanying online presentation which extends to the best images in the decade at https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/world/decade-in-pictures.html

Remember this: every image that appeared in this collection was published in NYT which tells you more about their commitment towards visual storytelling.

A personal bias to declare: I’m so happy to see Lam Yik Fei‘s pictures from the Hong Kong riots getting great play, here as well as in the daily print and online editions of NYT. Lam is a FB friend I haven’t met in person but I have been following his coverage of his homeland.

I’ve been asked often what can print journalism do to be different now that readers are leaving them for online outlets and I have always said: Use more pictures and use them well.

Because one of the best ways of truly appreciating great photojournalism is holding them up in prints.

Hopefully more editors will see this compilation and be inspired.
